Airport transfers
A fixed price agreed before you fly, for the one journey where you are most tired and least able to argue.

A pre-booked transfer costs more than a metered taxi and buys you a driver holding a sign, a fixed price, and no negotiation at midnight in a language you do not speak. For a first arrival, with luggage and children, that is usually worth it. On later trips most people stop bothering.
The metered alternative: the official rank charges the meter plus a 50 THB airport surcharge, plus expressway tolls if you use them. Both of those are legitimate. A driver who refuses the meter and quotes a flat 1,000 baht is not.
